It's Derby Day

After Barbaro's tragic accident I found out how dangerous racing really is for these horses. One serious injury almost guarantees their death. Ever since, I have struggled with the idea that even watching the Derby races somehow makes me an accomplice to their possible demise.
I have such a deep affection for all animals and especially horses. So majestic, powerful and beautiful.
But it is Derby Day, an american tradition, so I decided to go ahead and post.

Which horse are you betting on? Ever wonder how they come up with those names?

For you die hards, here is the "official" mint julep recipe:

Early Times Mint Julep
* 2 cups sugar* 2 cups water* Sprigs of fresh mint* Crushed ice*
Early Times Kentucky Whiskey* Silver Julep Cups

Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water together for five minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with six or eight sprigs of fresh mint, then refrigerate overnight. Make one julep at a time by filling a julep cup with crushed ice, adding one tablespoon mint syrup and two ounces of Early Times Kentucky Whisky. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.

(Sorry, according to the recipe I should have posted this yesterday to allow for the overnight refrigeration.)

Intersting that you wrote this and then tragedy struck at the Derby yet again. I'm indifferent on this one, I love the tradition of the races and wouldn't want to see them go, but it is so sad to see these horses get injured, especially when the outcome is the death of the horse.
