The Nothing Deck

We have constructed two more levels to our deck. Originally, I said it was not an additional expense we needed. I am the debt slayer in our business and household. I saw a deck addition as unnecessary. However, as it sometimes happens in marriage, my husband silently disagreed. Within days of our discussion, the invasive wisteria was cut down. Then the rotten pergola.
"Whatcha doin', honey?"
"Nothing'."
The bushes outside the sunroom window somehow replanted themselves in our front yard.
"Whatcha doin', honey?"
"Nothing."
I would wake to the grinding noise of power tools.
Still, "nothing," of course.
Days or maybe a week went by.
Then on a cold sunny morning, there were holes in the ground. Really deep holes.
Post digger holes.
Monday rolled around and husband was carrying 4x4 posts from behind the shed.
"I didn't have to buy them. They have been laying back there for a while."
It was time.
Husband doesn't ask for much. All he does is work. Besides, with the wisteria and bushes and pergola all gone, there really was a much better use for the space. I could start to envision the deck he had in his head. No plans. Nothing written down. The nothing deck.
I dutifully measured and sawed and drilled and hammered for several Mondays in a row.
The nothing deck is complete. Whew! I can relax.
Noooo, says husband. We have to replace all the old deck boards on the old deck because husband says the boards are splitting and dangerous.
"Look there, see?"
Somehow I was too stupid to see this coming. My back was still hurting from doing the nothing deck so I pleaded for one non-construction day off before embarking on the old deck board replacement project.
Thankfully it rained. Really hard and for a really long time.
This Monday, the project continues. Husband says we "can knock it out in a day!"
I can hardly wait.

If Eddie wants to build stuff please encourage this creative outlet and let him come over to our house. I could really put him to work!! Pete's soft hands have never touched a hammer (except to hang up art work).
